Nonmonotonic Reasoning

چکیده
Classical logic is the study of " safe " formal reasoning. Western Philosophers developed classical logic over a period of thirty-three centuries after its introduction in the form of syllogistic by Aristotle [1] in the third century B. C. Beginning in the nineteenth century with De Morgan [2] and Boole [3], responsibility for the development of classical logic moved from the philosophical to the mathematical community. Tarski [10] showed how to make classical logic into a mathematical discipline which led to model theory, set theory, recursion theory, and proof theory. The discovery of recursive function theory by and Turing [15] in the nineteen thirties, the development of digital computers with a Von Neumann architecture in the 1950's, the interest in machine simulation of hu

Influencing nonmonotonic reasoning by modifier strength manipulation
Despite the current belief that much common sense reasoning is nonmonotonic in nature, research indicates that only a limited percentage of people are good at nonmonotonic reasoning. Good nonmonotonic reasoners recognize the logical strengths and weaknesses of some arguments. In the present study, we focus on differences in the probabilistic interpretation of the modifiers typically and usually...
متن کاملLogic in Nonmonotonic Reasoning
We present a conceptual description of nonmonotonic formalisms as essentially two-layered reasoning systems consisting of a monotonic logical system, coupled with a mechanism of a reasoned choice of default assumptions. On this ‘surgery’, the main features of a nonmonotonic formalism are determined by the interplay between its logical basis and the nonmonotonic overhead. Furthermore, it allows ...
متن کاملA Compositional Reasoning System for Executing Nonmonotonic Theories of Reasoning
An agent that is reasoning about the world often needs to draw (defeasible) conclusions that are not logically entailed by its (incomplete) knowledge about the world. Nonmonotonic reasoning systems can be used to model these reasoning patterns. Implementations of agents that can reason in a defeasible manner need to include an implemented nonmonotonic reasoning system. In different applications...
متن کاملNonmonotonic Reasoning in Probabilistics
In probabilistics reasoning at optimum entropy ME reasoning has proved to be a most sound and consistent method for inference This paper investigates its properties in the framework of nonmonotonic reasoning In particular we show that ME reasoning satis es cumulativity and loop and we focus on its connection to conditionals Finally we intro duce the notion of a universal inference operation to ...
متن کاملExtending Prolog with Nonmonotonic Reasoning
Nonmonotonic reasoning has been developed to capture common sense inferences. This paper considers nonmonotonic reasoning in logic programs with negation { its implementation using Prolog and its integration with Prolog execution. Even within logic programming frameworks, a variety of inferencing methods, model-theoretic semantics, and language features have been proposed for diierent forms of ...
متن کاملTwo Paradigms of Nonmonotonic Reasoning
We provide a conceptual description of the field of nonmonotonic reasoning as comprising two essentially different theories, preferential and explanatory nonmonotonic reasoning. The relationship between the two constitutes the main theoretical problem of nonmonotonic reasoning, and its solution should hopefully provide an impetus for the future development of the field.
